International comics festival is the festival of the ninth art, organized and led since its beginnings in 2003 by the Happy Gallery of Student Cultural Center (SKC) Belgrade, as a part of its regular program. The festival is a non-profit event; it represents the largest and the most comprehensive comics project in Serbia and one of the most important meetings in the field of the ninth art in the region.
After a series of attempts to revitalize the comics, one of the most prolific artistic disciplines in the Serbian culture on the official artistic and aesthetic scene, the Student Cultural Center, as one of the primary participants in this initiative, managed to introduce into its regular annual program all manifest expression forms of the ninth art, as one of its strategic ideas.
As a remainder, back in 1977, exactly 40 years ago, the first professional exhibition of comics in Serbia was held in the SKC under the title Fiction – comics – society. It was conceptually created by Ljubomir Kljakić, and accompanied by two voluminous theoretical studies in the catalog of the exhibition, written by the author himself and Ješa Denegri.
Since its founding, and in every decade of the last century, the SKC was indeed a relevant place for contemporary art, especially alternative forms of artistic expression, conceptual art and rock'n'roll. During the past decade and a half of our century, its activities were in an authentic way, and again on the international level, marked at the domestic artistic scene with its program of the ninth art.
In the best tradition of its brilliant historical experiences and in precisely provided program space, for the past 15 years the International Comics Festival of the SKC is being held with exceptional successes. It is conceptually based on the international competition of authors of all ages from all countries of the world, presence of the most relevant comics artists worldwide, re-evaluation of domestic comics scene from its beginnings to the present, affirmation of the domestic comics publishing and young artists, and popularization of comics and related expressions, such as animated film and illustrations.
By emphasizing the artistic character of comics and the concept of presenting comics as an emphasizis of fine arts in gallery spaces, the uniqueness of this festival is also reflected in the presentation of comics of special artistic poetry to the audience, through exhibitions and awards for inventiveness, thus breaking stereotypes about this art medium.
In the past fifteen years about 2000 authors from 57 countries worldwide took part in the Festival competition. Among them, over 700 participants were in the “15 years of age or below” category. In the non-competitive part of the program guests of the festival were most distinguished artists worldwide, as well as winners of the Special award for the lifetime achievement and contribution to the Serbian comics scene.
In an effort to achieve the required level of quality of the programs, preparation of each edition of the festival required hard work and huge investments.
Thus, in order to maintain the festival as an event of international importance, the management of the SKC, led by director Slavoljub Veselinović, began to invest significant infrastructural and financial resources in the festival, succeeding not only to maintain it, but also to further advance it, while striving to gather at one place, and at the international level, the unquestionable qualities of the comics, and through this event, to give the ninth art the elitist level and vocation, which it deserves per se.
This year's jubilee – 15th anniversary of the International comics festival Salon of Comics will be marked with the exhibition of the winners of the festival contest – Grand Prix 2003-17, which will present the awarded works of all previous festival contests in the past 15 years.
As an exclusivity of this year's festival program, one needs to mention appearance of the Italian master of graphic novels - Gipi (Gian-Alfonso Pacinotti), a great retrospective exhibition (40 years of work) of Dejan Nenadov, Serbian artist who recently returned from the Netherlands, and as a true treasure, presence of French scriptwriter Dobs (Olivier Dobremel), who is sought-after for collaboration by many domestic artists.
Our comic audience can familiarize themselves with achievements and graphic poetry of Gipi, who once acquired the status of the most important contemporary Italian comics author, in the graphic novels printed by Novi Sad based Komiko publishing house. In cooperation with the Komiko, this year’s festival will also greet French manager, editor and publicist Nicolas Grivel.
A lecture by Nicolas Grivel on the French contemporary comics industry, overview of the portfolios of young concept-artists, animators and character designers, as well as the premiere screening of the animated film Nighthawk by Špela Čadež, are just some of the rarities of the festival program 2017.
Špela Čadež, Slovenian author of puppet films, is this year's winner of the Grand Prix in the category of short animated film at Animafest in Zagreb. Presentation of her work and screening of her films, in the selection of Italian critic Andrijana Ružić will be another program exclusivity for the local audience.
International comics festival is traditionally being held from Thursday to Sunday during the last week of September. The program of the 15th festival will be conducted from September 28, to October 1, 2017 in all galleries of the SKC. All programs are free and profiled for visitors of all ages.
Welcome to the Student Cultural Center, to our biggest festival of the ninth art.
Miki Pješčić, editor of the festival
